Subject: Pass HB 342--Powers and Duties of the State Board of Education

Dear Representative,

Please pass HB 342 by Rep. Dana Layton.  Utah  should create its own  standards, higher than Common Core, and not be forced into keeping standards that we were bribed to accept. through Race to the Top. Common Core's high school math standards are a definite step back.  Using informational text for English does not develop critical thinking skills.  I grew up reading literature and loving it.  These standards are not able to allow students to become college or career ready.  Our state is supposed to be in control of our education.  Federal control began with Jimmy Carter creating the Federal Department of Education, continued with No Child Left Behind, and will end in giving up our state rights by accepting Common Core.  Please don't let this happen to our state and our children.
