A tribute to Senator Bob Bennett.

Dear friends of the Hinckley Institute,

Senator Bob Bennett is the manifestation of true public service. During his 18-year tenure in the Senate, he never hesitated to reach across party lines to champion pragmatic solutions to critical issues. When he left the halls of the U.S. Capitol and became a Hinckley Institute Resident Scholar, Bob tackled his work with equal passion. He dedicated innumerable hours to urging our best and brightest young minds to become politically engaged. Bob challenged his students to question their assumptions, to test his positions, and even invited them to visit his home. It is telling that immediately after his stroke, Bob called to let me know he was ready to start teaching again.

These young minds found great growth in the teaching and mentorship Bob so willingly offered. Please join me in remembering him through some of their words.

"I took my final political science seminar course from Senator Bennett. He was an incredible professor of public policy and always spoke of the importance of seeking the public good over politics, to follow your moral conscience before all else. His love for learning–and teaching what he learned–transcended that of any other professor I've had the opportunity to learn from. His love of country was apparent during every lecture he gave. He was a true statesman." - Tianna Tu

"The time I spent in [Senator Bennett's] class and with the Hinckley Institute was a defining time in my life. He exemplified what it meant to be a true public servant for his students, colleagues, and anyone who met him. He was not afraid to cross the aisle. He taught us that anyone can make a difference. The lessons he taught will continue to be with me." - Jonathan Lee

"Senator Bennett taught me the value of compromise, and what it means to be a good politician. Thank you, sir, for your kindness and your leadership. Our State of Utah will forever be grateful for your dedication and service in the United States Senate." - Satin Tashnizi

"Senator Bennett has had a tremendous impact in my life. He taught my first political science course, showed me the possibility of a public official that transcends party lines, and truly instilled in me a passion for service and civic duty. The world is a better place because Senator Bennett was in it. I feel so fortunate to have learned from his light." - Lisa Hawkins

Ultimately, Bob's legacy will endure both through the integrity of his policies and the rising generation of civil servants whom he so fondly mentored. I am honored to have called Bob my senator, Hinckley Institute Hall of Fame inductee, and friend.
