<section number="41-6a-710"><effdate>5/6/2026</effdate><histories><history>Amended by Chapter <modchap sess="2026GS">432</modchap>, 2026 General Session</history><modyear>2026</modyear></histories><sunset repsec="63I-1-241" repdate="7/1/2027" /><catchline>Roadway divided into marked lanes -- Provisions -- Traffic-control devices.</catchline><tab/>On a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic the following provisions apply and any violation of this section is an infraction:<subsection number="41-6a-710(1)"><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(a)">Except as provided in Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(1)(c)" start="0">(1)(c)</xref>, a person operating a vehicle:<subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(a)(i)">shall keep the vehicle as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane; and</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(a)(ii)">may not move the vehicle from the lane until the operator has reasonably determined the movement can be made safely.</subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(b)">A determination under Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(1)(a)(ii)" start="0">(1)(a)(ii)</xref> is reasonable if a reasonable person acting under the same conditions and having regard for actual and potential hazards then existing would determine that the movement could be made safely.</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(c)">Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(1)(a)" start="0">(1)(a)</xref> does not apply to: <subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(c)(i)">an individual operating a motorcycle engaging in lane filtering as described in Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="41-6a-704" start="0">41-6a-704</xref>;</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(c)(ii)">a school bus that temporarily impedes a parking or bike lane while operating along the school bus's planned route and schedule; or</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(1)(c)(iii)">a public transit vehicle, as defined in Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="17B-2a-802">17B-2a-802</xref>, that temporarily impedes a parking or bike lane while loading or unloading passengers, or making an operational adjustment, along the public transit vehicle's planned route and schedule.</subsection></subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)"><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)">On a roadway divided into three or more lanes and providing for two-way movement of traffic, a person operating a vehicle may not drive in the center lane except:<subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)(i)">when overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction, and when the center lane is:<subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)(i)(A)">clear of traffic within a safe distance; and</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)(i)(B)">not a two-way left turn lane;</subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)(ii)">in preparation of making or completing a left turn in compliance with Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="41-6a-801" start="0">41-6a-801</xref>; or</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(a)(iii)">where the center lane is allocated exclusively to traffic moving in the same direction that the vehicle is proceeding as indicated by traffic-control devices.</subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)">Notwithstanding Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(2)(a)(i)" start="0">(2)(a)(i)</xref> and in accordance with Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(1)(a)" start="0">(1)(a)</xref>, a person operating a vehicle may drive in a center lane that is a two-way left turn lane if:<subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)(i)">the center lane is:<subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)(i)(A)">on a roadway divided into three or more lanes that provides for two-way movement of traffic; and</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)(i)(B)">clear of traffic within a safe distance;</subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)(ii)">there is only one lane of travel in the direction the person operating the vehicle is traveling; and</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(2)(b)(iii)">the person operating the vehicle is overtaking and passing a bicycle or moped that is moving at less than the reasonable speed of traffic that is present.</subsection></subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(3)"><subsection number="41-6a-710(3)(a)">A highway authority may erect traffic-control devices directing specified traffic to use a designated lane or designating those lanes to be used by traffic moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the roadway.</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(3)(b)">An operator of a vehicle shall obey the directions of a traffic-control device erected under Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(3)(a)" start="0">(3)(a)</xref>.</subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)"><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)">A person operating a motor vehicle may not drive within a bicycle lane except:<subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(i)">to cross a bicycle lane when turning into an intersection, street, alley, driveway, or other parking area;</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(ii)">when responding to striping, traffic control devices, or emergency conditions; or</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)">while operating:<subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)(A)">an authorized emergency vehicle;</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)(B)">a snow removal vehicle;</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)(C)">a vehicle providing municipal-type services, as defined in Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="19-3-303">19-3-303</xref>;</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)(D)">a school bus or transit vehicle, as defined in Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="17B-2a-802">17B-2a-802</xref>, to load or unload passengers, or make an operational adjustment, along the school bus's or transit vehicle's planned route and schedule; or</subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(a)(iii)(E)">a vehicle used by a postal service, as defined in Section <xref depth="3" refnumber="76-6-1001">76-6-1001</xref>.</subsection></subsection></subsection><subsection number="41-6a-710(4)(b)">A person operating a motor vehicle within a bicycle lane as described in Subsection <xref depth="4" refnumber="41-6a-710(4)(a)(i)">(4)(a)(i)</xref> shall yield the right of way to all bicycle traffic within the lane.</subsection></subsection></section>
