CENTER FOR THE SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE

5 AN ACT RELATING TO EDUCATION; ESTABLISHING THE CENTER FOR THE SCHOOL
6 OF THE FUTURE AT UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY; IDENTIFYING THE TYPES OF
7 ACTIVITIES THE CENTER SHALL ENGAGE IN; PROVIDING A $305,500
8 APPROPRIATION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
9 This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
10 ENACTS:
11 53B-18-601, Utah Code Annotated 1953
12 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
13 Section 1. Section 53B-18-601 is enacted to read:
14 Part 6. Center for the School of the Future
15 53B-18-601. Center for the school of the future -- Purpose.
16 (1) There is hereby established a Center for the School of the Future at Utah State
17 University.
18 (2) The center shall contribute to the creation and maintenance of a public education
19 system within the state that continually and systematically improves by building upon the most
20 effective existing practices by:
21 (a) identifying the best current approaches, techniques, and technologies in public
22 education;
23 (b) supporting the adoption of these innovations by the state and their adaptation to local
24 circumstances; and
25 (c) helping to build communities of teachers and parents that support each other in
26 continuing to improve their education.
27 (3) The activities of the center shall include:

1 (a) gathering, evaluating, and synthesizing the most effective and up-to-date educational
2 practices and techniques from across the nation to bring them to bear on the school of the future;
3 (b) establishing a teacher academy to help teachers improve their instructional ability and
4 implement more effective learning techniques and tools;
5 (c) establishing a family academy to involve and educate families and communities in
6 adopting changes to improve the health and education of their children; and
7 (d) establishing a design institute to consolidate ideas about effective schools and practices
8 and implement those ideas into effective, replicable models of education innovation.
9 Section 2. Appropriation.
10 (1) There is appropriated from the General Fund for fiscal year 1998-99, $305,500 to Utah
11 State University to help fund the activities of the Center for the School of the Future at the
12 university and to allow the center to challenge industrial sources to provide matching funds.
13 (2) For fiscal year 1999-2000 and for each fiscal year thereafter, the State Board of
14 Regents shall include in the higher education system budget a requested line item appropriation
15 to help fund the activities of the center.
16 Section 3. Effective date.
17 This act takes effect on July 1, 1998.
