21        WHEREAS beginning in 1917, the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red

4    preparation;
5        WHEREAS the Red Cross was also heavily involved in easing burdens created by the

7        WHEREAS the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter began a Utility Assistance Program in
8    1982 to assist low income people who are elderly, disabled, or have medical emergencies;
9        WHEREAS in 1986 an AIDS awareness prevention program was begun, and in the 1990's
10    came the initiation of a Migrant Farm Worker Program and a Nurse Aide Program;
11        WHEREAS the American Red Cross provides disaster planning, preparedness, community
12    disaster education and mitigation, prompt relief to victims of major disasters, and emergency
13    communications and supporting social services;
14        WHEREAS the American Red Cross is also the leading provider of prompt relief to
15    victims of single family disaster, access to emergency financial assistance for members of the
16    armed forces and their families, first aid and CPR education and training, life guarding, swimming
17    and water safety education and training, HIV/AIDS prevention education, mission-related care
18    giving for the elderly and other priority groups, information and training on International
