This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor expresses deep gratitude to
the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee, its President, Mitt Romney, Olympic
volunteers and public safety personnel for their invaluable contribution to the overwhelming
success of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
WHEREAS, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City have been hailed as an
overwhelming success beyond the most optimistic predictions;
WHEREAS, the dedication and drive of the athletes was matched by the tireless efforts of
volunteers, public safety, and many others whose efforts were far from the limelight but who
brought to the Games the intangible character of friendship;
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee overcame many difficult
challenges in its quest to provide a first class Olympic experience;
WHEREAS, as President of the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee, Mitt Romney,
has demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills in coordinating the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing
Committee's efforts to prepare for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games;
WHEREAS, Mitt Romney has exhibited a consuming drive to succeed at tough challenges,
turning the 2002 Olympic Winter Games into an unparalleled event, evidencing his talent for
managing and motivating those who serve with him;
WHEREAS, Fraser Bullock, the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee's Chief
Operating Officer, worked tirelessly to ensure that the 2002 Olympic Winter Games were
financially successful and managed the many intricate and complex operations of the Games;
WHEREAS, through the efforts of the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee, the
budget for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games was characterized by a commitment to fiscal
responsibility with the Committee repaying the taxpayers of Utah for their investment ahead of
schedule and also providing funding to establish and promote an ongoing winter sports legacy in the
state;
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee kept the focus of the Olympic
experience on the athletes as a tribute to their skill and dedication to sport;
WHEREAS, the enormous success of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games provides an
economic springboard that will yield long-term benefits in attracting business to the state;
WHEREAS, visitors to the state consistently praised the beauty of the state and the
friendliness of its people, giving the world an extraordinarily positive view of Utah; and
WHEREAS, the state of Utah is deeply grateful for the expert leadership of the Salt Lake
Olympic Organizing Committee and the key role Mitt Romney has played in making the 2002
Olympic Winter Games an incredible achievement that will be etched forever in our memories:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
Governor concurring therein, express heartfelt gratitude to the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing
Committee and its employees, its President, Mitt Romney, and all of the volunteer and public safety
personnel for their immeasurable contribution to the success of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in
Salt Lake City, and for their drive and dedication to make the slogan of the Games, "Light the Fire
Within," a reality for the citizens of Utah, the United States, and the world.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Salt Lake
Olympic Organizing Committee, Mitt Romney, and Fraser Bullock.
