             8      General Description:
             9          This bill amends the chronic disease monitoring provisions.
             10      Highlighted Provisions:
             11          This bill:
             12          .    directs the Department of Health, beginning July 1, 2004, to monitor and detect
             13      incidences of lupus in the state.
             14      Monies Appropriated in this Bill:
             15          None
             16      Other Special Clauses:
             17          None
             18      Utah Code Sections Affected:
             19      AMENDS:
             20          26-5-3, as enacted by Chapter 126, Laws of Utah 1981

             22      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             23          Section 1. Section 26-5-3 is amended to read:
             24           26-5-3. System for detecting and monitoring diseases established by department.
             25          (1) The department shall develop and maintain a system for detecting and monitoring
             26      chronic diseases within the state and shall investigate and determine the epidemiology of those
             27      conditions which contributed to preventable and premature sickness, or both, and to death and



             28      disability.
             29          (2) Beginning July 1, 2004, the department shall consider the disease known as "lupus"
             30      a chronic disease subject to the detection and monitoring provisions of Subsection (1).
