             9      LONG TITLE
             10      General Description:
             11          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the practice
             12      and promotion of the Golden Rule.
             13      Highlighted Provisions:
             14          This resolution:
             15          .    recognizes the practice and promotion of the Golden Rule as a commitment for the
             16      common good; and
             17          .    expresses a shared sense of duty to support and practice the Golden Rule and urges
             18      all Utahns to live by it.
             19      Special Clauses:
             20          None

             22      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             23          WHEREAS, the Golden Rule, "do to others as you would have them do to you," is a
             24      precept that has been shared around the world by many faiths and traditions for thousands of
             25      years;
             26          WHEREAS, varied expressions of this counsel form the essence of many world
             27      religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism;



             28          WHEREAS, there are at least 108 different formulations of the Golden Rule taken from
             29      different cultures, philosophies, and teachings;
             30          WHEREAS, members of these faiths and traditions in Utah practice the Golden Rule in
             31      their daily experiences;
             32          WHEREAS, the Golden Rule Project of the Manners/Golden Rule Foundation was
             33      begun in November 2003 with the goal of placing the Golden Rule in middle schools and high
             34      schools in the local community in a manner that would attract the attention of students and
             35      encourage consideration of the Golden Rule;
             36          WHEREAS, these representations consist of 16 Golden Rule formulations taken from
             37      different cultures, philosophies, and teachings, placed on a two-page, framed diptych;
             38          WHEREAS, currently, Golden Rule diptychs have been placed in the Utah Museum of
             39      Fine Art, West Jordan Middle School, West Jordan High School, Waterford School, Rowland
             40      Hall St. Marks, Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center, Pingree School for Autistic Children, Odyssey
             41      House Kearns High School, Judge Memorial High School, Crescent View Middle School,
             42      Central High School, Butler Middle School, and Albion Middle School;
             43          WHEREAS, various local artists contributed their time and talents to create unique
             44      representations of the Golden Rule for each recipient school;
             45          WHEREAS, currently, work is progressing on a Spanish-language translation of the
             46      Golden Rule document to acknowledge the largest minority group in Utah, and the design of a
             47      Golden Rule document intended for placement in elementary schools;
             48          WHEREAS, groups who have contributed their time and resources during the initial
             49      phase of the Golden Rule Project are the Utah Arts Council, the Utah Humanities Council, the
             50      Midvale Boys and Girls Club, and the University of Utah Book Arts Program;
             51          WHEREAS, the practice of the Golden Rule is especially important in relationships
             52      with those who are less fortunate;
             53          WHEREAS, the less fortunate include those who suffer from hunger; lack safe, decent,
             54      accessible, and affordable housing; have no basic, quality health care; or are poor and
             55      economically insecure;
             56          WHEREAS, in the spirit of the Golden Rule it is incumbent upon all Utahns, including
             57      public and private groups and churches and government entities, to ensure that the less
             58      fortunate are treated justly and with compassion; and



             59          WHEREAS, a growing number of faith based groups, community organizations, and
             60      individuals in Utah are pledging their duty, support, and practice of the Golden Rule:
             61          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             62      Governor concurring therein, applaud the practice and promotion of the Golden Rule as a
             63      commitment for the common good.
             64          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor express a shared
             65      sense of duty to support and practice the Golden Rule and urge all Utahns to live by it.
             66          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Golden Rule
             67      Project of the Manners/Golden Rule Foundation, the Utah Poverty Partnership, the Midvale
             68      Boys and Girls Club, the University of Utah Book Arts Program, the Utah Arts Council, and
             69      the Utah Humanitarian Council.
