             7      LONG TITLE
             8      General Description:
             9          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor designates February as
             10      Wear Red Month in recognition of the fight against heart disease among women.
             11      Highlighted Provisions:
             12          This resolution:
             13          .    designates February as Wear Red Month in the state of Utah and urges all citizens
             14      to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by
             15      commemorating this day by wearing the color red; and
             16          .    declares that increasing awareness, speaking up about heart disease, and
             17      empowering women to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, can save
             18      thousands of lives every year.
             19      Special Clauses:
             20          None
             21     
             22      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             23          WHEREAS, diseases of the heart are the nation's leading cause of death and strokes are
             24      the third leading cause of death;
             25          WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of over 421,000 American females
             26      each year, or approximately one death per minute;
             27          WHEREAS, each year, females account for 52% of all deaths due to cardiovascular


             28      disease and 60% of deaths caused by strokes;
             29          WHEREAS, too many women die each year because they are unaware that heart
             30      disease is their number one killer;
             31          WHEREAS, in 2007, the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular disease in the
             32      United States, including strokes, were estimated to be $286,000,000,000;
             33          WHEREAS, nearly as many women die of heart disease, strokes, and all other
             34      cardiovascular diseases than the next four leading causes of death combined, including all
             35      cancers;
             36          WHEREAS, only 16% of women surveyed in 2009 identified cardiovascular diseases
             37      as the greatest health problem facing them;
             38          WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month;
             39          WHEREAS, Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association's national call to
             40      increase awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death for women, and to inspire
             41      women to take charge of their heart health;
             42          WHEREAS, each woman should learn her own personal risk for heart disease, using
             43      tools such as the American Heart Association's My Life Check, Go Red For Women Heart
             44      Check Up, Go Red For Women Better U, and by talking to her healthcare provider; and
             45          WHEREAS, making the right choices relating to proper nutrition, physical activity, and
             46      other healthy lifestyle choices are essential to living a heart healthy life:
             47          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             48      Governor concurring therein, designate February as Wear Red Month in the state of Utah and
             49      urge all citizens to show their support for women and their fight against heart disease by
             50      commemorating this month by wearing the color red.
             51          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor declare that by
             52      increasing awareness, speaking up about heart disease, and empowering women to reduce their
             53      risk of cardiovascular disease, thousands of lives can be saved every year.
             54          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the American
             55      Heart Association, the Utah Chapter of the American Heart Association, and to the Utah
             56      Department of Health.
