11 This bill modifies a grant program for teacher training in math.

14 ▸ expands a grant program for teacher training in math by allowing a grant to be used
15 to provide a stipend, professional development, and leadership opportunities to an
16 experienced mathematics teacher to assist the teacher in becoming a teacher leader.

25 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
26 Section 1. Section 53A-6-901 is amended to read:
27 53A-6-901. Grants for math teacher training programs.
28 (1) If the state obtains matching funds of equal sums from private contributors, the
29 board may award grants to institutions of higher education or nonprofit educational
30 organizations for programs that provide:
31 (a) mentoring and training leading to a secondary education license with an
32 endorsement in mathematics for an individual who:

39 (b) a stipend, professional development, and leadership opportunities to an experienced
40 mathematics teacher who demonstrates high content knowledge and exemplary teaching and
41 leadership skills to assist the teacher in becoming a teacher leader.
42 (2) (a) The board shall make rules in accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah
43 Administrative Rulemaking Act, that establish criteria for awarding grants under this section.
44 (b) In awarding grants, the board shall consider the amount or percent of matching
45 funds provided by the grant recipient.
46 Section 2. Effective date.
47 If approved by two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, this bill takes effect
48 upon approval by the governor, or the day following the constitutional time limit of Utah
49 Constitution, Article VII, Section 8, without the governor's signature, or in the case of a veto,
50 the date of veto override.
