IMPORTANCE OF UTAH SPORT AND OLYMPIC LEGACY

9     LONG TITLE
10     General Description:
11          This concurrent resolution acknowledges the important role that Utah's sport and
12     Olympic legacy activities play in the state's economy and branding.
13     Highlighted Provisions:
14          This resolution:
15          ▸     expresses support for Utah's ongoing sport and Olympic legacy activities;
16          ▸     expresses appreciation for and support of Utah's efforts to continue to strengthen
17     and expand it's position as "The State of Sport" in the national and international
18     sport and Olympic communities;
19          ▸     encourages Utah to remain "ready, willing, and able" as the opportunity arises to
20     host major sporting events of all kinds, and be prepared should an opportunity arise
21     to host a future Olympic Winter Games; and
22          ▸     directs the Utah Sports Commission to work with the Governor, Legislature, and
23     other public and private entities to oversee any bid on a future Olympic Winter
24     Games.

28     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
29          WHEREAS, the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games was an unforgettable
30     and truly remarkable event in the history of Salt Lake City and the state of Utah;
31          WHEREAS, the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games left a powerful and
32     lasting impact that has facilitated Utah's ability to build a robust sports brand and create a
33     significant Olympic legacy;
34          WHEREAS, Utah's sports brand has been an ongoing benefit to Utah's citizens, the
35     state's image, and the state's economy;
36          WHEREAS, Utah continues to invest in sport and Olympic legacy activities that are
37     being conducted at an extraordinarily high level;
38          WHEREAS, Utah has hosted hundreds of major Olympic and non-Olympic sporting
39     events since the 2002 Olympic Winter Games that have enhanced Utah's economy, image, and
40     global position in sport;
41          WHEREAS, Utah's world-class venues continue to host events and train athletes;
42          WHEREAS, Utah's citizens also use and enjoy these world-class facilities;
43          WHEREAS, Utah's sports community continues to be unified in its effort to strengthen
44     Utah's sport and Olympic legacy initiatives and amplify Utah's global sport brand as "The State
45     of Sport";
46          WHEREAS, Utah continues to actively partner with and support the mission and
47     charter of the United States Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Committee, and
48     many other partners that are helping Utah enhance its sport and Olympic legacy;
49          WHEREAS, Utah's sport and Olympic legacy efforts continue to leverage and use
50     significant 2002 Olympic Winter Games infrastructure and assets, including athletic and
51     related venues, transportation improvements, "green" initiatives, and many other elements from
52     the 2002 Olympic Winter Games that continue to provide significant benefit to Utah's citizens
53     and economy;
54          WHEREAS, because of Utah's excellence in hosting the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic
55     Winter Games, extraordinary sport and institutional knowledge continue to be used in the
56     hosting of many major sporting events of all types; and
57          WHEREAS, Utah is "The State of Sport," and sport and Olympic legacy activities
58     continue to generate and drive significant economic benefit and return on investment to Utah's

59     economy and image:
60          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
61     Governor concurring therein, expresses support and encouragement to the Utah Sports
62     Commission and its many partners, including the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, venues,
63     sports partners, the national governing bodies of sport and international sports federations,
64     community partners, volunteers, and others in their efforts to keep Utah well positioned
65     globally in sports and the Olympic movement so that when the opportunity arises, Utah will
66     stand "ready, willing, and able" to welcome the world back.
67          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, should our great state have the opportunity to be
68     selected to represent the United States of America to bid on a future Olympic Winter Games,
69     the Utah Sports Commission shall coordinate and work with the Governor, Legislature, and
70     other public and private sector officials to help organize and oversee the bid.
71          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Utah Sports Commission shall also work with
72     the Governor, Legislature, cities, and other public officials as deemed appropriate, to address
73     and secure any public sector support and assistance that may be required to bid on and secure a
74     future Olympic Winter Games.
75          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the International
76     Olympic Committee, the United States Olympic Committee, the Utah Sports Commission, the
77     Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, the Governor's Office of Economic Development, the Utah
78     State Chamber of Commerce, and the members of Utah's congressional delegation.
