8     LONG TITLE
9     General Description:
10          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor honors the life and
11     legacy of Jon M. Huntsman, Sr.
12     Highlighted Provisions:
13          This resolution:
14          ▸     recognizes Jon M. Huntsman, Sr. as a great industrialist and a pioneer in the
15     chemical industry;
16          ▸     recognizes his philanthropic work with the establishment of the Huntsman Cancer
17     Institute; and
18          ▸     expresses sympathy for his loss and gratitude for Mr. Huntsman's generosity.
19     Special Clauses:

22     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
23          WHEREAS, Jon M. Huntsman, Sr. was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, on June 21, 1937,
24     and ascended humble beginnings to be elected student body president of Palo Alto High School
25     and to receive the Harold Zellerbach Scholarship to attend the Wharton School of the
26     University of Pennsylvania;
27          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman married his high school sweetheart, Karen Haight, and
28     began a family that he loved with his whole heart;
29          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman served in the U.S. Navy as an officer aboard the USS

30     Calvert and subsequently earned a master's degree in business administration from the Marshall
31     School of Business at the University of Southern California;
32          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman is widely regarded as one of his generation's great
33     industrialists and as a pioneer in the chemical industry;
34          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman founded Huntsman Container Company in 1970 and
35     revolutionized packaging and plastics;
36          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman formed Huntsman Chemical Corporation in 1982, which
37     today represents an $11 billion global manufacturer and marketer of chemicals;
38          WHEREAS, in his heart, Mr. Huntsman was first a philanthropist, and his life's
39     ambition was much greater than business;
40          WHEREAS, early in his adult life Mr. Huntsman began quiet acts of charity as an
41     anonymous donor to a Navy widow;
42          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman lost his dear mother, Kathleen Robison Huntsman, to
43     breast cancer when she was just 58 years old and promised her that he would one day do
44     something to help cure this dreaded disease;
45          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman and Karen Huntsman made a founding gift of $10 million
46     to the University of Utah in 1993 to create a cancer institute, and quickly followed that gift
47     with an additional $100 million to offer Utahns new, better cancer treatments with the creation
48     of Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI);
49          WHEREAS, today HCI is one of the world's most renowned cancer institutes having
50     directed over $2 billion from more than 1 million donors and grant makers toward improving
51     cancer treatment, relieving the suffering of cancer patients, and providing education about
52     cancer risk, prevention, and care;
53          WHEREAS, HCI is the only National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center in
54     Utah, Utah's official cancer center, and only Cancer Specialty Hospital;
55          WHEREAS, HCI serves the surrounding five-state area, 17% of the United States, and
56     is in the top 1% for patient satisfaction;
57          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman's kind acts of philanthropy extended beyond cancer to his

58     faith, the homeless, the hungry, mothers and children, the economically disadvantaged,
59     athletics, cultural purposes, and those for whom higher education was financially out of reach
60     without scholarship assistance;
61          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman refused to retreat in the face of adversity, but instead
62     viewed adversity as an opportunity to learn, move forward, and try again; and
63          WHEREAS, Mr. Huntsman served as a role model and inspiration to thousands and
64     leaves behind a great company, but even more so, leaves behind a legacy of optimism, ethical
65     behavior, and philanthropy that will be remembered as his greatest accomplishments:
66          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
67     Governor concurring therein, recognizes the legacy of kindness, generosity, and hard work that
68     Jon M. Huntsman, Sr. leaves behind.
69          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor express deep
70     sympathy for his loss, and gratitude for Mr. Huntsman's life and care toward others.
71          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to his wife, Karen,
72     and to his children: Jon Huntsman, Jr., Peter Huntsman, Christena Huntsman Durham, David
73     Huntsman, Paul Huntsman, James Huntsman, Jennifer Huntsman Parkin, and Mark Huntsman.
