10 General Description:
11 This concurrent resolution recognizes the exemplary accomplishments of the University
12 of Utah's John R. Park Debate Society.
13 Highlighted Provisions:
14 This resolution:
15 ▸ recognizes the benefits of speech and debate education for college students; and
16 ▸ recognizes the exemplary accomplishments of the University of Utah's John R. Park
17 Debate Society, including receiving the 2016-17 season-long national championship
18 awarded by the National Parliamentary Debate Association.

22 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
23 WHEREAS, speech and debate education helps college students develop important
24 skills in communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the practice of
25 public speaking;
26 WHEREAS, participants in speech and debate learn not only to analyze and express
27 complex ideas effectively, but also to listen, concur, question, or dissent with reason and
28 compassion;
29 WHEREAS, the skills learned through speech and debate serve students well
30 throughout their lives;
31 WHEREAS, the University of Utah's John R. Park Debate Society was founded in 1869
32 and welcomes University of Utah undergraduate students from any major and any year to
33 participate in activities;
34 WHEREAS, the University of Utah's John R. Park Debate Society finished in sixth
35 place overall, and first among participating PAC-12 institutions at the National Parliamentary
36 Debate Association National Championship Tournament; and
37 WHEREAS, the University of Utah's John R. Park Debate Society earned the 2016-17
38 season-long national championship awarded by the National Parliamentary Debate
39 Association:
40 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
41 Governor concurring therein, recognizes the exemplary accomplishments of the University of
42 Utah's John R. Park Debate Society.
