9 General Description:
10 This resolution of the House of Representatives encourages international education.
11 Highlighted Provisions:
12 This resolution:
13 ▸ encourages education institutions to develop international education programs that
14 support learning about other cultures and global issues;
15 ▸ encourages the presence of international students and instructors in Utah education
16 institutions; and
17 ▸ encourages students to participate in study abroad opportunities in other countries
18 around the world.

22 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the state of Utah:
23 WHEREAS, international education teaches foreign languages, addresses global issues,
24 and provides in-depth understanding of other cultures;
25 WHEREAS, courses in foreign languages prepare students to seek careers in a global
26 marketplace and enhance understanding of other nations' cultures, values, and beliefs;
27 WHEREAS, language acquisition and cultural awareness result in stronger international
28 trade and commerce;
29 WHEREAS, Utah is a leader in dual language immersion in elementary and secondary
30 education, but has low participation in higher education study abroad programs;
31 WHEREAS, study abroad programs enrich academic instruction, perspectives, and
32 personal development;
33 WHEREAS, Utah residents who study abroad contribute to increased global awareness
34 within the state;
35 WHEREAS, international students add diversity to local communities, promote
36 understanding of different cultures, and create important worldwide relationships;
37 WHEREAS, the presence of international students and instructors in Utah education
38 institutions inspires an appreciation for differences among cultures and a deeper understanding
39 of the values and perspectives of other people;
40 WHEREAS, Utah has an active foreign trade market that international businesses seek
41 out because of the state's workforce;
42 WHEREAS, international collaboration is required to make important breakthroughs in
43 research and technology; and
44 WHEREAS, students immersed in diverse cultures and languages are better prepared to
45 be members of the global community and for the job market of the future:
46 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
47 state of Utah encourages education institutions to develop international education programs
48 that support learning about other cultures and global issues.
49 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the state of Utah
50 encourages the presence of international students and instructors in education institutions.
51 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the state of Utah
52 encourages students to participate in study abroad opportunities in countries around the world.
53 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the State Board
54 of Education, the State Board of Regents, and the Utah System of Technical Colleges Board of
55 Trustees.
