8     LONG TITLE
9     General Description:
10          This bill amends provisions relating to temporarily filling a midterm vacancy in the
11     United States Senate.
12     Highlighted Provisions:
13          This bill:
14          ▸     modifies requirements relating to the governor's appointment of a temporary
15     replacement to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate.

24     Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
25          Section 1. Section 20A-1-502 is amended to read:
26          20A-1-502. Midterm vacancies in office of United States representative or
27     senator.
28          (1) When a vacancy occurs for any reason in the office of a representative in Congress,
29     the governor shall issue a proclamation calling an election to fill the vacancy.
30          (2) (a) When a vacancy occurs in the office of U.S. senator, [it] the vacancy shall be
31     filled for the unexpired term at the next regular general election.
32          (b) The governor shall appoint [a person to serve as U.S. senator until the vacancy is
33     filled by election from one of three persons nominated by the state central committee of the
34     same] one of three individuals nominated by the Legislature, who are members of the same
35     state political party as the prior officeholder, to serve as United States senator until the vacancy
36     is filled by election.
