9 LONG TITLE
10 General Description:
11 This joint resolution of the Legislature encourages more training and resources to
12 improve the safety of code enforcement officers.
13 Highlighted Provisions:
14 This resolution:
15 ▸ recognizes the vital role that code enforcement officers play in the health, safety,
16 and welfare of our communities;
17 ▸ recognizes the risks that come with being a code enforcement officer;
18 ▸ encourages code enforcement officers to become familiar with organizations and
19 resources that provide training; and
20 ▸ encourages local municipalities to adopt ordinances and policies to greater facilitate
21 the training and protection of code enforcement officers.

25 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
26 WHEREAS, code enforcement officers provide an essential service by helping to
27 maintain the standards and dignity of our communities;
28 WHEREAS, recent tragic events have highlighted the fact that many code enforcement
29 officers enter dangerous situations in the performance of their duties;
30 WHEREAS, due to the function they serve and the risks they encounter, code
31 enforcement officers deserve the respect and dignity afforded to all public servants who
32 regularly risk their own safety for the betterment of our communities, along with the resources
33 they need to assure their own safety; and
34 WHEREAS, in response to the need for continuing education of code enforcement
35 officers, certain nonprofit organizations such as Utah Ordinance Compliance Association and
36 American Association of Code Enforcement provide access to education, training, and
37 resources that could increase the safety and awareness of all code enforcement officers:
38 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
39 strongly encourages code enforcement officers to become familiar with organizations and
40 resources that provide training to increase situational awareness, recognize and understand
41 personal property rights, develop professional conduct, and aid them in all other duties
42 associated with their position.
43 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah encourages
44 local municipalities to adopt ordinances and policies to greater facilitate the training and
45 protection of code enforcement officers, including but not limited to the resources cited in this
46 resolution.
47 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah League
48 of Cities and Towns and the Utah Association of Counties for distribution to all their
49 constituents.
