9     General Description:
10          This concurrent resolution creates the Old Iron Town State Monument.
11     Highlighted Provisions:
12          This resolution:
13          ▸     outlines the general process for proposing the creation of the Old Iron Town State
14     Monument;
15          ▸     includes reasons for creating the Old Iron Town State Monument; and
16          ▸     approves the creation of the Old Iron Town State Monument.

20     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
21          WHEREAS, Utah Code Title 79, Chapter 4, Part 12, State Monuments Act, provides a
22     process for the creation of a state monument proposed by the Division of Parks and Recreation
23     within the Department of Natural Resources;
24          WHEREAS, the Division of Parks and Recreation proposed the creation of the Old Iron
25     Town State Monument to the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Interim
26     Committee;
27          WHEREAS, the Division of Parks and Recreation found that:
28          (1) the property of the Old Iron Town is already owned and managed by the Division
29     of Parks and Recreation;

30          (2) Old Iron Town is symbolic of early Utah leadership's efforts to remain independent
31     of the United States by developing industrial centers after the transcontinental railroad
32     connected the country from coast to coast;
33          (3) Old Iron Town was a thriving company community from 1868 to 1876, with
34     several hundred residents, a school, a boarding house, a general store, and a post office, in
35     addition to the iconic conical charcoal kilns, foundry, and iron works; and
36          (4) Old Iron Town operations supplied ore to the region for industrial and community
37     projects;
38          WHEREAS, the Iron County Commission by resolution expressed support for the
39     creation of the Old Iron Town State Monument; and
40          WHEREAS, the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Interim Committee
41     recommends to the Legislature the creation of the Old Iron Town State Monument:
42          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
43     Governor concurring therein, approves the creation of the Old Iron Town State Monument
44     consisting of structures and land located in Township 37 South, Range 14 West, Section 8, and
45     described by a map and legal description on file with the Division of Parks and Recreation.
46          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Old Iron Town State Monument is to be
47     managed in accordance with Utah Code Title 79, Chapter 4, Part 12, State Monuments Act.
48          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be delivered to the
49     Division of Parks and Recreation.
