9 General Description:
10 This bill creates the Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program.
11 Highlighted Provisions:
12 This bill:
13 ▸ creates the Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program;
14 ▸ requires the governor to consider the nomination of the governing board of the
15 association that represents a majority of classified school employees employed in
16 the state in making a nomination to the Secretary of Education for the federal
17 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program; and
18 ▸ awards the Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award to the governor's
19 nominee for the federal Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program.

28 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
29 Section 1. Section 53G-11-519 is enacted to read:
30 53G-11-519. Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award.
31 (1) As used in this section:
32 (a) "Association" means the governing board of the association that represents a
33 majority of classified school employees employed in the state.
34 (b) "Classified school employee" means the same as that term is defined in the
35 Recognizing Achievement in Classified School Employees Act, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 6682.
36 (c) "Eligible individual" means a classified school employee who meets the eligibility
37 requirements to be a nominee for the Recognizing Achievement in Classified School
38 Employees Act, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 6681 et seq.
39 (2) (a) In accordance with the Recognizing Achievement in Classified School
40 Employees Act, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 6681 et seq., the governor shall annually nominate a classified
41 school employee for the Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program.
42 (b) The governor shall consider submissions from the association in making the
43 nomination described in Subsection (2)(a).
44 (c) The association shall submit a list of eligible individuals to the governor no later
45 than September 1 each year, beginning on September 1, 2020.
46 (3) (a) There is created the Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award
47 Program to recognize excellence exhibited by public school system employees providing
48 services to students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.
49 (b) The Utah Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award shall be awarded to the
50 governor's nominee for the federal Recognizing Inspiring School Employees Award Program
51 under the Recognizing Achievement in Classified School Employees Act, 20 U.S.C. Sec. 6681
52 et seq.
