8     LONG TITLE
9     General Description:
10          This resolution honors the League of Women Voters.
11     Highlighted Provisions:
12          This resolution:
13          ▸     recognizes the League of Women Voters as an important civic organization; and
14          ▸     recognizes the league's history of civic engagement and its intent to continue
15     forward.
16     Special Clauses:
17          None

19     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
20          WHEREAS, the United States Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the
21     Constitution of the United States on June 4, 1920, guaranteeing America's women the right to
22     vote;
23          WHEREAS, Carrie Chapman Catt, a suffragist and founder of the League of Women
24     Voters, led the state-by-state strategy that resulted in passage of the 19th Amendment;
25          WHEREAS, Carrie Chapman Catt spoke at the Conference of Women Voters that was
26     held in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on November 17, 1919;
27          WHEREAS, the conference was sponsored by the Utah State Suffrage Council,

28     presided over by Utah feminists Emmeline B. Wells, Emily S. Richards, and others;
29          WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters is a civic group, originally formed to help
30     women take a larger role in public affairs after they won the right to vote;
31          WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters has grown to include all citizens, while
32     encouraging informed and active participation in government, working to increase
33     understanding of major public policy issues, and influencing public policy through education
34     and advocacy;
35          WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters is proud to be nonpartisan, neither
36     supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always
37     working on vital issues of concern to members and the public; and
38          WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters was formed 104 years ago on February 14,
39     1920:
40          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
41     Governor concurring therein, recognizes the League of Women Voters as an important civic
42     organization working for the welfare of all Utahns.
43          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor
44     concurring therein, recognizes the long history of civic engagement by the League of Women
45     Voters and its intent to pursue this work for the next 100 years.
