    <gdhead lineno="4">General Description:</gdhead>
    <gd numlevel="1" lineno="5" slineno="0-5">This resolution recognizes the importance of expanding science, technology, engineering,  
      <ln numlevel="1" lineno="6" slineno="0-6"/>and math (STEM) opportunities for women.
    </gd>
    <hphead lineno="7">Highlighted Provisions:</hphead>
    <hp numlevel="1" lineno="8" slineno="0-8">This resolution:
      <hl numlevel="1" lineno="9" slineno="0-9" level="1">highlights the underrepresentation of women in the STEM workforce; and</hl>
      <hl numlevel="1" lineno="10" slineno="0-10" level="1">encourages girls and young women in the state to pursue education and careers in STEM  
        <ln numlevel="1" lineno="11" slineno="0-11"/>occupations.

  <enact numlevel="1" lineno="15" slineno="0-15">Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:</enact>
  <bdy>

      <section type="enact" display="false" src="reso">WHEREAS, throughout history, women have made extensive contributions in the areas of  
        <sectionText lineno="17">
          <ln lineno="17"/>science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM);
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="18" slineno="1-3" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, according to a report from the National Science Foundation, the STEM  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="19" slineno="1-4"/>workforce is one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy with a 20% increase in the  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="20" slineno="1-5"/>workforce between 2011 and 2021;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="21" slineno="1-6" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, in 2021, nearly 24% of the United States workforce was employed in STEM  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="22" slineno="1-7"/>occupations;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="23" slineno="1-8" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, despite the overall increase in the STEM workforce, only 18% of women in  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="24" slineno="1-9"/>the United States workforce hold STEM occupations;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="25" slineno="1-10" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, of the STEM workforce in the United States, 35% consists of women,  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="26" slineno="1-11"/>compared to 65% consisting of men;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="27" slineno="1-12" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, according to a report from the Utah Women and Leadership Project, the  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="28" slineno="1-13"/>gender gap in the STEM workforce is much wider in Utah, with only 21% of the STEM  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="29" slineno="1-14"/>workforce consisting of women;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="30" slineno="1-15" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, encouraging girls and young women to pursue higher education in STEM  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="31" slineno="1-16"/>subjects is vital to increasing the number of women employed in the STEM workforce;
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="32" slineno="1-17" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, data indicates that gender stereotypes may impact a young woman's  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="33" slineno="1-18"/>aspirations to pursue higher education in STEM subjects; and
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="34" slineno="1-19" display="tab">
          <para/>WHEREAS, the state can help to close the gender gap in the STEM workforce by  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="35" slineno="1-20"/>dispelling stereotypes and promoting career opportunities for women in STEM occupations:
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="36" slineno="1-21" display="tab">
          <para/>NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="37" slineno="1-22"/>recognizes the importance of closing the gender gap in the STEM workforce and increasing  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="38" slineno="1-23"/>opportunities for women in STEM occupations.
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="39" slineno="1-24" display="tab">
          <para/>BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah encourages girls  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="40" slineno="1-25"/>and young women in Utah to explore STEM subjects, pursue higher education in  
          <ln numlevel="1" lineno="41" slineno="1-26"/>STEM-related fields, and work towards careers in STEM occupations.
