Line Item: STEM Action Center

Function

The STEM Action Center was established in H.B. 139 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Action Center. The functions of the center include: working with the State Board of Education to aquire technology for schools, supporting professional development for teachers, engaging private entitities in providing staff support or financial resources for STEM activities, and acting as a research and development center for education related instructional technologies.

The Center is also require to provide a list of at least 10 best practices innovations used in Utah schools resulting in at least 80 percent of the students providing at grade level in STEM areas.

Statutory Authority

Statutory authority for the STEM Action Center is found in UCA 63M-1-3204.

Funding Detail

Funding for the STEM Action Center is from the General Fund and is used primarily for staff support and the purchase of technology.

Program: STEM Action Center - Grades 6-8

Function

The STEM Action Center - Grades 6-8 program has been established as a pilot program to provide schools with STEM education related instructional technology. The instructional technologies purchased are required to support mathematics instruction in the selected schools. Up to 10 percent of the allocation can be used to provide professional development related to the educational technologies selected.

Program: STEM College Ready Math

Function

A primary function of the STEM program is to support mathematics instruction for secondary students allowing them to prepare for college mathematics courses. College readiness in mathematics has been identified as a gap needing to be filled going forward.

The Center is required by statute to have an online college readiness assessment tool which can be accessed by public education and higher education students. Additionally, the director of the Center is required to track and compare student performance related to college readiness.
