FY 2016 Appropriation

The Character Education line item is administered by the Lt. Governor's Office. The Legislature appropriates money to the program with the objective of supporting civic and character education. The Lt. Governor's Office grants most of the funds to outside organizations that promote program objectives through public relations campaigns, teacher training, and school presentations.

Appropriation Overview

During the 2015 General Session, the Legislature appropriated for Fiscal Year 2016, $284,500 from all sources for Character Education. This is a 3.1 percent increase from Fiscal Year 2015 revised estimated amounts from all sources. The total includes $203,000 from the General/Education Funds, an increase of 1.1 percent from revised Fiscal Year 2015 estimates.

Under section 63J-1-603 of the Utah Code, the Legislature intends that appropriations provided to the Governor's Office - Character Education in Item 15, Chapter 14, Laws of Utah 2014 not lapse at the close of Fiscal Year 2015.


Nonlapsing authority to this line item was discontinued beginning FY 2010. The Legislature augmented funding to this line item with a $200,000 ongoing General Fund appropriation in FY 2012.
