HB0082 - Payment for Bailiff and Other Services in Courts of Record

State Impact:
Total cost to local sheriffs for baliff services for the State trial courts (District and Juvenile) is approximately $5 million. Currently the State pays $2,216,000 for baliff services in the District Court only. Adding the Juvenile Court would cost approximately $1.8 million. However, current statute indicates these programs are funded subject to available legislative apropriations. Therefore no new State funds are mandated.
Individual and Business Impact:
The bill mandates baliff services for courts of record (District and Juvenile). If fully funded, the local sheriffs' offices would have their District and Juvenile Court costs covered. If funding continues at the current level, the local governments would be providing unpaid services to the State costing approximately $2.8 million. These costs would have to be covered from local government revenues..
