A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR
DESIGNATING MAY 16, 1997, AS UTAH BONE MARROW REGISTRATION DAY
IN THE STATE OF UTAH; AND ENCOURAGING QUALIFIED CITIZENS TO
CONSIDER PLACING THEIR NAMES ON THE NATIONAL MARROW REGISTRY.
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
WHEREAS 30,000 children and adults are diagnosed each year with leukemia, aplastic
anemia, or other potentially fatal blood diseases;
WHEREAS transplantation technology has achieved remarkable success over the past
several decades;
WHEREAS of the patients who can be helped by bone marrow transplants, 70% cannot
find suitably matched donors within their own families;
WHEREAS the National Marrow Donor Program and its local affiliate have actively
encouraged participation of African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and
Hispanics in the program;
WHEREAS the chance of finding a suitable unrelated donor for patients who need them
can be as remote as one in a million;
WHEREAS the National Marrow Donor Program was established to recruit and match
patients and unrelated, willing donors across the country, working with the Federal Health
Resources and Services Administration, the Naval Medical Resources and Services
Administration, and the Naval Medical Research and Development Command; and
WHEREAS many healthy, qualified Utahns between the ages of 18 and 60 would be
willing to donate a small blood sample to be placed on the National Marrow Registry, but are not
aware of the program or the process of registering:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
Governor concurring therein, designate May 16, 1997, as Utah Bone Marrow Registration Day in
the state of Utah.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor encourage qualified
Utah citizens to find out more about how to save lives through the National Marrow Donor Program,
and to consider being placed on the National Marrow Registry by contacting their local blood bank.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the National Marrow
Donor Program and its local affiliate.
