6    AN ACT RELATING TO THE STATE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY; PROVIDING
7    THAT THE MUSEUM MAKE AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF
8    UTAH, AND ASSIST WITH THE CARE OF, PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS ABOUT
9    ARCHEOLOGICAL AND PALEONTOLOGICAL OBJECTS; PROVIDING A $150,000
10    APPROPRIATION FOR THE PROGRAMS; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
11    This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
12    AMENDS:
13         53B-17-601, as last amended by Chapter 303, Laws of Utah 1990
14    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
15        Section 1. Section 53B-17-601 is amended to read:
16         53B-17-601. Utah Museum of Natural History -- Traveling exhibits and Outreach
17     Programs.
18        [Recognizing the cultural and educational advantages of maintaining a centralized display
19    of the many objects of natural science which could support and encourage local and municipal
20    museums throughout the state of Utah, there]
21        (1) There is established at the University of Utah the Utah Museum of Natural History,
22    where tangible objects reflecting the past, present, and continuing development of our natural
23    history may be collected and displayed for educational and cultural purposes.
24        (2) (a) The museum shall make available to people throughout the state, through traveling
25    exhibits and outreach programs, archeological and paleontological objects retrieved from the state
26    of Utah.
27        (b) The museum shall provide professional expertise and assistance in the proper care of


1    the archeological and paleontological collections from state lands as they are housed throughout
2    the state.
3        (3) The museum shall submit an annual request to the Legislature to fund the ongoing
4    costs of the programs authorized under Subsection (2) as part of its base budget.
5        Section 2. Appropriation.
6        There is appropriated for fiscal year 1997-98 $75,000 from the General Fund and $75,000
7    from the Uniform School Fund to the State Museum of Natural History for costs incurred in
8    implementing the traveling exhibits and outreach programs authorized in Section 53B-17-601.
9        Section 3. Effective date.
10        This act takes effect on July 1, 1997.
