SUNDANCE WILDERNESS AREA RESOLUTION

2
1997 GENERAL SESSION

3
STATE OF UTAH

4
Sponsor: Bradley T. Johnson

5    A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF
6    NATURAL RESOURCES TO CONDUCT A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE
7    ESTABLISHMENT OF ROBERT REDFORD'S SUNDANCE PROPERTY AS A
8    WILDERNESS AREA.
9    Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
10        WHEREAS the designation of wilderness has long been an issue of great controversy in
11    Utah, and Robert Redford has long been a champion of preserving land in the state as wilderness;
12        WHEREAS the Sundance property, located on the east side of Mount Timpanogas and
13    owned by Mr. Redford, is a beautiful area of the state;
14        WHEREAS designating the property as wilderness would be in keeping with Mr.
15    Redford's well-known regard for the preservation of Utah's natural beauty, observed most recently
16    in his vocal support of the Grand Staircase National Monument designation;
17        WHEREAS private property ownership is a sacred right, and no such land should be
18    designated as wilderness without the property owner's approval; and
19        WHEREAS working with Mr. Redford toward constructing a means to accomplish this
20    type of wilderness designation would meet goals shared by him and many citizens of the state
21    concerned about wilderness in Utah:
22        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah request
23    that the Utah Department of Natural Resources conduct a feasibility study on the designation of
24    Robert Redford's Sundance property as wilderness.
25        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the Department of
26    Natural Resources and Robert Redford.
