AND MANAGEMENT OF WILDLIFE

1997 GENERAL SESSION

6    A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE REAFFIRMING UTAH'S COMMITMENT
7    TO MANAGING AND PROTECTING UTAH'S WILDLIFE UNDER CURRENT,
8    SUCCESSFUL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS; AND DISCOURAGING
9    WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT NOT BASED ON SCIENCE.
10    Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
11        WHEREAS Utah has hundreds of stable or expanding wildlife species throughout the state;
12        WHEREAS Utah sportsmen contribute more than $30,000,000 per year to preserve,
13    manage and protect all wildlife species;
14        WHEREAS Utah farmers and ranchers provide millions of acres of feed and shelter for
15    wildlife;
16        WHEREAS Utah sportsmen provide $2,250,000 per year to protect and enhance wildlife
17    habitat;
18        WHEREAS several high profile species such as Peregrine Falcon, Bald Eagles, Wild
19    Turkey, Canada Geese, Moose, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Cougar, Black Bear and others are more
20    abundant and more dispersed throughout Utah than any time in recent history due to current
21    wildlife management programs;
22        WHEREAS foundations such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Foundation for
23    North American Wild Sheep, Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Safari Club
24    International, Mule Deer Foundation, and other groups contribute millions of dollars to protect,
25    enhance, and preserve wildlife habitat;
26        WHEREAS the Regional Advisory Council and Wildlife Board process allows for public
27    input of wildlife management decisions; and


1        WHEREAS the Wildlife Board is appointed by the Governor, who is elected by the people
2    of Utah:
3        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah reaffirm
4    Utah's commitment to managing and protecting Utah's wildlife populations for future generations
5    under the current and successful wildlife management programs, and discourage wildlife
6    management via public referendum vote, whose agendas are not based on science and are often
7    funded by radical nonUtah organizations.
8        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to Sportsmen for Fish
9    and Wildlife, the Wildlife Board, and the Division of Wildlife Resources.
