RESOLUTION DESIGNATING BONE MARROW

REGISTRATION DAY

1997 GENERAL SESSION

STATE OF UTAH

Sponsor: Millie M. Peterson

    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR
    DESIGNATING MAY 16, 1997, AS UTAH BONE MARROW REGISTRATION DAY
    IN THE STATE OF UTAH; AND ENCOURAGING QUALIFIED CITIZENS TO
    CONSIDER PLACING THEIR NAMES ON THE NATIONAL MARROW REGISTRY.
    Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
        WHEREAS 30,000 children and adults are diagnosed each year with leukemia, aplastic
    anemia, or other potentially fatal blood diseases;
        WHEREAS transplantation technology has achieved remarkable success over the past
    several decades;
        WHEREAS of the patients who can be helped by bone marrow transplants, 70% cannot
    find suitably matched donors within their own families;
        WHEREAS the National Marrow Donor Program and its local affiliate have actively
    encouraged participation of African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and
    Hispanics in the program;
        WHEREAS the chance of finding a suitable unrelated donor for patients who need them
    can be as remote as one in a million;
        WHEREAS the National Marrow Donor Program was established to recruit and match
    patients and unrelated, willing donors across the country, working with the Federal Health
    Resources and Services Administration, the Naval Medical Resources and Services
    Administration, and the Naval Medical Research and Development Command; and
        WHEREAS many healthy, qualified Utahns between the ages of 18 and 60 would be
    willing to donate a small blood sample to be placed on the National Marrow Registry, but are not
    aware of the program or the process of registering:
        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the

    Governor concurring therein, designate May 16, 1997, as Utah Bone Marrow Registration Day in
    the state of Utah.
        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor encourage qualified
    Utah citizens to find out more about how to save lives through the National Marrow Donor Program,
    and to consider being placed on the National Marrow Registry by contacting their local blood bank.
        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the National Marrow
    Donor Program and its local affiliate.
