5    AN ACT RELATING TO HIGHWAYS; ALLOWING CERTAIN IDENTIFICATION
6    NUMBERS TO BE ASSIGNED TO MOTOR CARRIERS.
7    This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
8    AMENDS:
9         27-17-405, as enacted by Chapter 170, Laws of Utah 1996
10    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
11        Section 1. Section 27-17-405 is amended to read:
12         27-17-405. Information lettered on vehicle -- Exceptions.
13        (1) Except under Subsection (3), a motor carrier shall have lettered on both sides of any
14    vehicle used for transportation of persons or property:
15        (a) the name of the motor carrier company; and
16        (b) the location of domicile by city and state.
17        (2) The lettering shall be free from obstruction and legible at least from a distance of 50
18    feet.
19        (3) (a) In addition to the lettering required under Subsection (1), the department may
20    require an identification number assigned by the department to be displayed in accordance with
21    this section.
22        (b) The number may be used to assist the department in conjunction with the U.S.
23    Department of Transportation to develop a program to improve motor carrier safety enforcement.
24        [(3)] (4) A commercial vehicle primarily used by a farmer for the production of
25    agricultural products is exempt from the provisions of this section.
