AN ACT RELATING TO ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY; REQUIRING THE DEPARTMENT
OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY TO STUDY PERCHLORATE CONTAMINATION OF
DRINKING WATER AND TO REPORT ITS FINDINGS TO A LEGISLATIVE INTERIM
COMMITTEE; AND PROVIDING A REPEAL DATE.
This act enacts uncodified material.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
Section 1. Study of perchlorate contamination of ground water.
The Department of Environmental Quality shall study, review, and make findings and
recommendations concerning:
(1) the magnitude and extent of perchlorate contamination of ground water, aquifers, and
drinking water systems in selected areas within the state as determined by the Department of
Environmental Quality;
(2) research being conducted on perchlorate contamination and remedial measures by the
Environmental Protection Agency and others;
(3) research being conducted by the U.S. Air Force, the Environmental Protection
Agency, and others on the health effects of perchlorate in drinking water;
(4) acceptable standards for concentration levels of perchlorate in drinking water adopted
or under review by other states or the federal government; and
(5) the acceptable concentration of perchlorate in drinking water to be considered for
adoption by rule by the Safe Drinking Water Board.
Section 2. Report to Interim Committee.
The Department of Environmental Quality shall report its findings and recommendations
to the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Interim Committee at or before the
committee's October, 1998 meeting.
Section 3. Repeal date.
This act is repealed October 31, 1998.
