6 AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; PROVIDING A $350,000 APPROPRIATION
7 TO THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR DISTRIBUTION TO SCHOOL
8 DISTRICTS TO FUND BUS ROUTES REQUIRED BECAUSE OF HAZARDOUS
9 WALKING CONDITIONS; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
10 This act enacts uncodified material.
11 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
12 Section 1. Appropriation.
13 (1) (a) There is appropriated from the Uniform School Fund for fiscal year 1998-99,
14 $350,000 to the State Board of Education for distribution to school districts to fund or help fund
15 bus routes required because of hazardous walking conditions.
16 (b) As used in this section, "hazardous walking conditions" means those conditions caused
17 by major road construction or repair or the rerouting of vehicular traffic due to major road
18 construction or repair that threaten the safety of students traveling to and from school.
19 (2) This appropriation is in addition to the appropriation made in Section 53A-17a-126 for
20 state supported transportation of public school students and the other revenue sources authorized
21 for student transportation purposes under Section 53A-17a-127.
22 (3) The board shall allocate the appropriation to school districts on the basis of competitive
23 grant applications and compliance with qualifying criteria established by the board pursuant to its
24 rulemaking authority.
25 Section 2. Effective date.
26 This act takes effect on July 1, 1998.
