5    AN ACT RELATING TO ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY; REQUIRING THE DEPARTMENT
6    OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY TO STUDY PERCHLORATE CONTAMINATION OF
7    DRINKING WATER AND TO REPORT ITS FINDINGS TO A LEGISLATIVE INTERIM
8    COMMITTEE; AND PROVIDING A REPEAL DATE.
9    This act enacts uncodified material.
10    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
11        Section 1. Study of perchlorate contamination of ground water.
12        The Department of Environmental Quality shall study, review, and make findings and
13    recommendations concerning:
14        (1) the magnitude and extent of perchlorate contamination of ground water, aquifers, and
15    drinking water systems in selected areas within the state as determined by the Department of
16    Environmental Quality;
17        (2) research being conducted on perchlorate contamination and remedial measures by the
18    Environmental Protection Agency and others;
19        (3) research being conducted by the U.S. Air Force, the Environmental Protection
20    Agency, and others on the health effects of perchlorate in drinking water;
21        (4) acceptable standards for concentration levels of perchlorate in drinking water adopted
22    or under review by other states or the federal government; and
23        (5) the acceptable concentration of perchlorate in drinking water to be considered for
24    adoption by rule by the Safe Drinking Water Board.
25        Section 2. Report to the Interim Committee.
26        The Department of Environmental Quality shall report its findings and recommendations
27    to the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Interim Committee at or before the


1    committee's October, 1998, meeting.
2        Section 3. Repeal date.
3        This act is repealed October 31, 1998.
