6    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR
7    COMMENDING NIKKI STONE, THE FIRST UTAHN TO WIN A GOLD MEDAL IN THE
8    OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES, FOR HER VICTORY IN THE WOMEN'S FREESTYLE
9    AERIAL SKIING COMPETITION AT THE 1998 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN
10    NAGANO, JAPAN.
11    Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
12        WHEREAS on Wednesday, February 18, 1998, at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano,
13    Japan, Nikki Stone won the Gold Medal in the Women's Freestyle Aerial Skiing Competition;
14        WHEREAS Nikki Stone's victory was the culmination of many years of tremendous effort
15    and preparation;
16        WHEREAS Nikki, a student at the University of Utah, first became interested in skiing
17    while still in her teens, and in 1991 won the North American Aerials Title;
18        WHEREAS in 1992 Nikki Stone was named World Cup Rookie of the Year;
19        WHEREAS two years later she competed in her first Olympic Games, placing 13th at the
20    1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway;
21        WHEREAS in 1995, Nikki won the World Cup aerial title and the World Championships;
22        WHEREAS in 1997, Nikki tripled her normal practice schedule as part of her intense
23    preparation for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games;
24        WHEREAS her triumph not only marks the realization of her own athletic dream, but is
25    also the first time a Utahn has captured a Gold Medal in the Olympic Winter Games; and
26        WHEREAS the state of Utah is proud to welcome its first winter gold medalist home after
27    a hard-earned and well-deserved victory:


1        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
2    Governor concurring therein, honor Nikki Stone for winning the Gold Medal in the Women's
3    Freestyle Aerial Skiing Competition at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
4        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor express the gratitude
5    of the entire state for representing Utah in such honorable, heroic fashion, and express best wishes
6    for her continued success in the future.
7        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Nikki Stone, the
8    United States Ski and Snowboard Association, the Salt Lake Olympic Committee, and the United
9    States Olympic Committee.
