6    A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE SUPPORTING EFFORTS TO DEVELOP
7    OLYMPIC HOUSING THAT CAN BECOME PERMANENT, AFFORDABLE S AND
7a     ACCESSIBLE s HOUSING
8    FOR UTAHNS.
9    Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
10        WHEREAS Utah is experiencing an acute shortage of affordable S AND ACCESSIBLE s
10a    housing;
11        WHEREAS the 2002 Winter Olympic Games present the state with a tremendous
12    opportunity to assist the broader community in creating a legacy of benefits, including permanent,
13    affordable, and accessible housing;
14        WHEREAS an Olympic village for athletes' housing will be constructed for the 2002
15    Winter Olympic Games using Olympic revenues and bonding authority of the University of Utah;
16        WHEREAS the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games has
17    assured that athletes' housing for the Games will be available after the games as student housing
18    for University of Utah students;
19        WHEREAS the Salt Lake Organizing Committee has recognized the opportunity to
20    develop housing for media personnel and has issued a Request for Proposals to construct up to
21    3,000 rooms proximate to downtown Salt Lake City to house media personnel; and
22        WHEREAS the per diem allocations given media personnel for their housing expenses
23    during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games represent an important potential source of revenue that
24    the Salt Lake Organizing Committee could target to help provide housing for media personnel to

27        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the legislature urges the Salt Lake

1    Organizing Committee to assure that media housing constructed in conjunction with the 2002
2    Winter Olympic Games include an appropriate and substantial mix of units along the Wasatch
3    front, with special consideration for proximity to Olympic venues, that, after the Games, will be
4    available as affordable S AND ACCESSIBLE s housing accessible to low or moderate income Utahns
4a    or people with
5    disabilities, for the long term benefit of the citizens of the state.
