6 AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; PROVIDING THAT THE STATE BOARD
7 OF EDUCATION ADOPT CURRICULA REQUIRING STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN
8 APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES FOR ALL GRADES; AND PROVIDING THAT THE
9 BOARD PROHIBIT SCHOOLS FROM ORGANIZING INTERSCHOLASTIC COMPETITION
10 FOR STUDENTS PRIOR TO THE NINTH GRADE.
11 This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
12 ENACTS:
13 53A-13-108, Utah Code Annotated 1953
14 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
15 Section 1. Section 53A-13-108 is enacted to read:
16 53A-13-108. Interscholastic activities in elementary and middle schools.
17 (1) Since physical activity is essential to a healthy lifestyle throughout life and contributes
18 to the proper growth and health of children, the State Board of Education shall adopt curricula
19 requiring student participation in appropriate physical activities taught by properly trained and
20 licensed teachers for all grades in the public schools.
21 (2) To ensure broad participation in appropriate physical activities and the avoidance of
22 those activities which may unduly interfere with other parts of the school curricula or cause injury
23 to student participants, the board shall:
24 (a) encourage intramural programs in the secondary schools; and
25 (b) prohibit schools from organizing or supporting interscholastic competition for students
26 prior to ninth grade.
