RESOLUTION URGING UTAHNS TO HOST PARENTS OF

OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC ATHLETES IN 2002 OLYMPIC

WINTER GAMES AND 2002 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES

2000 GENERAL SESSION

STATE OF UTAH

Sponsor: David Ure

                  A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION OF THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR URGING
                  THE CITIZENS OF UTAH TO HOST THE PARENTS OF ATHLETES COMPETING IN THE
                  2002 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES AND 2002 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES.
                  Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
                      WHEREAS, the state of Utah looks forward eagerly to welcoming the many athletes from
                  around the world who will compete in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the VIII Paralympic
                  Winter Games;
                      WHEREAS, many athletes are at this moment engaged in intense training and preparation
                  for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the VIII Paralympic Winter Games;
                      WHEREAS, the parents of these aspiring Olympians and Paralympians have supported and
                  encouraged their daughters and sons to pursue their Olympic dreams;
                      WHEREAS, for many years these parents have sacrificed greatly to help their children
                  prepare for their quest for victory;
                      WHEREAS, this sacrifice may prevent those parents from attending the 2002 Olympic
                  Winter Games and the VIII Paralympic Winter Games and supporting their loved ones for financial
                  reasons;
                      WHEREAS, elected leaders of the state of Utah want to open their homes to these parents
                  so that one more financial barrier to their attendance at these Games may be lifted; and
                      WHEREAS, Utahns can play a vital role in making the Olympic dream not only a memory
                  but a personal experience for many parents of Olympic competitors:
                      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
                  Governor concurring therein, pledge to open our homes to the parents of the athletes who will
                  compete in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the VIII Paralympic Winter Games.

                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor encourage all Utahns
                  to offer a warm welcome and a place to stay so that parents of competing athletes may join us in
                  celebrating the achievements and triumphs of the world's Olympians and Paralympians.
                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the International
                  Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the United States Olympic Committee,
                  the National Paralympic Committee, and the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee.
