RESOLUTION URGING TRAINING OF

             2
JUDGES

             3
2001 GENERAL SESSION

             4
STATE OF UTAH

             5
Sponsor: Mike Thompson

             6      This joint resolution of the Legislature urges the Judicial Council to provide Utah's judges
             7      with training in parental rights.
             8      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             9          WHEREAS, Utah's judges are frequently required to make determinations that can
             10      significantly impact the lives of children and their parents;
             11          WHEREAS, currently, judges receive training regarding the rights of children in the
             12      judicial system;
             13          WHEREAS, judges should also receive training on the rights of parents to ensure that their
             14      legal determinations benefit from increased access to the full range of potential issues that surface
             15      among family members in the judicial system;
             16          WHEREAS, the rights of children and parents should be weighed and considered carefully
             17      when making judgments that may affect families for years to come; and
             18          WHEREAS, training in both child and parental rights would ensure a balanced approach
             19      to issues coming before Utah's judges:
             20          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah urge the
             21      Judicial Council to provide Utah's judges with training in issues relating to parental rights in
             22      addition to training in children's rights.
             23          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Judicial
             24      Council.
