This joint resolution of the Legislature urges the Judicial Council to provide Utah's judges
with training in parental rights.
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
WHEREAS, Utah's judges are frequently required to make determinations that can
significantly impact the lives of children and their parents;
WHEREAS, currently, judges receive training regarding the rights of children in the
judicial system;
WHEREAS, judges should also receive training on the rights of parents to ensure that their
legal determinations benefit from increased access to the full range of potential issues that surface
among family members in the judicial system;
WHEREAS, the rights of children and parents should be weighed and considered carefully
when making judgments that may affect families for years to come; and
WHEREAS, training in both child and parental rights would ensure a balanced approach
to issues coming before Utah's judges:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah urge the
Judicial Council to provide Utah's judges with training in issues relating to parental rights in
addition to training in children's rights.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Judicial
Council.
