             6      This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the Utah
             7      Shakespearean Festival for the consistently high caliber of professional theatre it provides
             8      to the citizens of Utah and the nation and for winning the 2000 Antoinette Perry "Tony"
             9      Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The resolution recognizes the efforts of festival
             10      founder and executive producer Fred C. Adams for his contributions to the festival's
             11      enduring success and popularity.
             12      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             13          WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival was founded in 1961 by Fred C. Adams and
             14      presented its first season in 1962;
             15          WHEREAS, under Mr. Adams' tutelage, the Utah Shakespearean Festival has grown from
             16      a budget of $1,000 and 3,276 paid admissions in 1961 to a 2000 annual budget of $5.1 million and
             17      155,000 paid admissions;
             18          WHEREAS, as founder and executive producer of the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Mr.
             19      Adams' continuing role in the success of the festival includes safeguarding the festival's standards,
             20      helping to choose the right combination of directors and designers, selecting upcoming seasons,
             21      raising necessary operating and development funds and greeting thousands of theatre patrons who
             22      flock each season to the festival;
             23          WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival is considered by many to be one of the most
             24      prestigious repertory theatres and Shakespeare Festivals in the United States;
             25          WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival is celebrating its fortieth year;
             26          WHEREAS, on June 4, 2000 the Utah Shakespearean Festival was recognized with the
             27      Antoinette Perry "Tony" Award as America's Outstanding Regional Theatre by recommendation


             28      of the American Theatre Critics Association;
             29          WHEREAS, the recommendation was acted upon by the American Theatre Wing and the
             30      League of American Theatres and Producers in New York City;
             31          WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival's "Tony" Award for outstanding Regional
             32      Theatre follows national and international recognition for the consistent excellence of the festival;
             33          WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival promotes and encourages tourism from
             34      within and without the state boundaries resulting in significant economic benefit for Cedar City,
             35      Iron County, and the entire state; and
             36          WHEREAS, the state of Utah is indebted to Mr. Adams and all those who work with him
             37      for establishing professional theatre of the highest quality in the state of Utah:
             38          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             39      Governor concurring therein, recognize the Utah Shakespearean Festival for the consistently high
             40      caliber of professional theatre it provides to the citizens of Utah and the nation and for winning
             41      the 2000 Antoinette Perry "Tony" Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.
             42          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor recognize the efforts
             43      of Fred C. Adams, festival founder and executive producer, in helping the festival to achieve and
             44      maintain its enduring success and popularity.
             45          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to Fred C.
             46      Adams.
