6 This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor urges the United States Mint
7 to select images of the beehive and the seagull for placement on the commemorative quarter
8 representing the state of Utah.
9 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
10 WHEREAS, on January 1, 1999, the United States Mint initiated the 50 State Quarters
11 Program;
12 WHEREAS, the program commemorates each state in the Union through the minting of
13 a special quarter featuring a design honoring a state's unique history, traditions, and symbols;
14 WHEREAS, the 50 State Quarters Program releases quarters approximately every ten
15 weeks in the same order the states joined the Union;
16 WHEREAS, the Utah quarter is currently scheduled for release in 2007;
17 WHEREAS, Utah's history, traditions, and symbols reflect the determination and faith of
18 its citizens;
19 WHEREAS, "Deseret," or the honeybee, is a symbol of the state's early pioneer heritage
20 of thrift, industry, and resolve to turn the desert into a land teeming with crops, livestock, and
21 homes developed to support its new inhabitants;
22 WHEREAS, Subsection 63-13-5.5 (7) designates the state emblem as the beehive and
23 Subsection 63-13-5.5 (15) designates the state insect as the honeybee;
24 WHEREAS, the seagull holds special significance in the state's history due to the fact that
25 they came by thousands and devoured the crickets threatening to devour the crops of 1848, just
26 one year after settlers entered the Salt Lake Valley;
27 WHEREAS, the coming of the seagulls was considered a miracle by the settlers;
28 WHEREAS, Subsection 63-13-5.5 (2) designates the state bird as the seagull;
29 WHEREAS, it is fitting that images of the beehive and the seagull be selected for
30 placement on the Utah quarter minted as part of the 50 State Quarters Program as symbols of
31 Utah's unique history and traditions; and
32 WHEREAS, the United States Mint should select these symbols as the best representation
33 of Utah's tradition of thrift, industry, and faith:
34 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
35 Governor concurring therein, urges the United States Mint to select images of the beehive and the
36 seagull for placement on the commemorative quarter representing Utah as part of the 50 State
37 Quarters Program.
38 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the United States
39 Mint.
