7 This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the Utah
8 Shakespearean Festival for receiving the National Governors Association Award for
9 Distinguished Service to the Arts for 2001. The resolution also expresses gratitude to those
10 whose tireless efforts bring quality and professionalism to the festival.
11 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
12 WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival is considered by many to be one of the most
13 prestigious repertory theatres and Shakespearean Festivals in the United States;
14 WHEREAS, on June 4, 2000, the Utah Shakespearean Festival was recognized with the
15 Antoinette Perry "Tony" Award as America's Outstanding Regional Theatre by recommendation
16 of the American Theatre Critics Association;
17 WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival continues to win awards recognizing its
18 tremendous quality and professionalism;
19 WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival won the National Governors Association
20 Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts for 2001;
21 WHEREAS, the award has great significance to the thousands of artists, technicians, staff
22 and volunteers, as well as the hundreds of thousands of patrons who have attended the festival
23 during the past 41 years;
24 WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival promotes and encourages tourism from
25 within and without the state boundaries resulting in considerable economic benefit for Cedar City,
26 Iron County, and the entire state; and
27 WHEREAS, the Utah Shakespearean Festival has brought significant prestige to the
28 reputation of the state as a haven for dramatic artists dedicated to their craft:
29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
30 Governor concurring therein, recognizes the Utah Shakespearean Festival for receiving the
31 National Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts for 2001.
32 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor recognize the
33 economic and artistic benefits enjoyed by the entire state due to the quality and professionalism
34 of the Utah Shakespearean Festival.
35 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Mr. Fred C.
36 Adams, founder and executive producer of the Utah Shakespearean Festival.
