H.C.R. 601 Enrolled
This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the Centennial
of Murray City and extends best wishes to Murray City and its citizens.
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
WHEREAS, Murray City was incorporated on January 3, 1903 and will soon be
celebrating its Centennial;
WHEREAS, Murray City, like the rest of Salt Lake Valley, was settled by Latter-day
Saint pioneers who arrived in 1847;
WHEREAS, historical records show that, as early as 1860, twenty families lived in the
area then called "South Cottonwood";
WHEREAS, residents of the area wanted to be in control of their own destiny;
WHEREAS, in 1901 an Incorporation Committee drafted a petition stating the desire of
the citizens to incorporate, defining the boundaries for a proposed city, and requesting that the
city be named Murray, after Territorial Governor Eli H. Murray;
WHEREAS, after a successful incorporation election in November 1902, Murray City
was proclaimed a city of the third class;
WHEREAS, upon taking the Oath of Office on January 3, 1903, C.L. Miller, the first
Mayor of Murray, said, "This town of Murray is your town, and it will be what you make it";
WHEREAS, the first council members were James Gilbert, H.S. Sanders, A.E. White,
William McCleary, and Reynolds Cahoon;
WHEREAS, in 1905 Murray City achieved reclassification as a city of the second class
and was divided into five municipal wards for the purpose of electing a board of education for
a new city school district, which became Murray School District;
WHEREAS, through a special election in July 1981, the citizens of Murray approved
the adoption of a Mayor-Council form of government;
WHEREAS, Murray City will commemorate its Centennial on January 3, 2003 and the
state of Utah will commemorate Statehood Day on January 4, 2003; and
WHEREAS, the current officials of Murray City, which are Daniel C. Snarr, Mayor,
Krista K. Dunn, City Council Chair (District 5), and Council members Richard V. Stauffer
(District 1), Robert D. Robertson (District 2), "John" Christensen (District 3), and Patricia W.
Griffiths (District 4), invite all residents of Utah to join these celebrations:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
Governor concurring therein, recognizes the Centennial of Murray City and extend their warm
wishes to Murray City and its citizens as they commemorate the Centennial of their city.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mayor
Daniel C. Snarr, Council Chair Krista K. Dunn, Council Members Richard V. Stauffer, Robert D.
Robertson, "John" Christensen, Patricia W. Griffiths, and Centennial Commission Chair William
E. Dunn.
