RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING COMPETITIVE

                 
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG HIGH

                 
SCHOOLS IN UTAH

                 
2003 GENERAL SESSION

                  This joint resolution of the Legislature expresses support for the achievements and efforts
                  of the Utah Academic Decathlon, with support from Utah communities, school districts,
                  businesses, and Dixie State College. This resolution recognizes the commitment of these
                  entities to promoting competitive academic excellence, recognizes and encourages all
                  Utah high schools in their efforts to pursue academic achievements, expresses leadership
                  support for competitive excellence among individuals and schools in Utah, and expresses
                  appreciation to Dixie State College for its efforts over the past 20 years in running the
                  Utah Academic Decathlon and for representing the state of Utah at the United States
                  National Academic Decathlon.
                  Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
                      WHEREAS, competitive academic achievement in Utah should be promoted and
                  supported;
                      WHEREAS, Academic Decathlon teams are fielded from throughout the state of Utah;
                      WHEREAS, many local businesses and communities have shown their support of
                  Academic Decathlon teams;
                      WHEREAS, Academic Decathlon teams should solicit support and sponsorship from
                  their local community and establish partnerships with area businesses;
                      WHEREAS, for 20 years Dixie State College has provided leadership and support to
                  the Utah Academic Decathlon and represents the state of Utah at the United States National
                  Academic Decathlon;
                      WHEREAS, students with exceptional achievements in the areas of speech, language
                  and literature, essay, science, technology, mathematics, social science, art, and music compete
                  in the decathlon and are deserving of valued recognition;


                      WHEREAS, hundreds of Utah educators and volunteers devote time, energy, and
                  expertise to promote self worth through educational achievements to expand horizons; and
                      WHEREAS, the Utah Legislature acknowledges the need for collaborative efforts from
                  businesses, the community, and the state to support competitive academic excellence:
                      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
                  recognizes and supports the efforts of the Utah Academic Decathlon to encourage excellence
                  among high school students who represent their schools at the regional, state, and national level.
                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognize the leadership and support
                  that Dixie State College has provided to the Utah Academic Decathlon.
                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes and encourages additional
                  business partnerships aimed at supporting scholastic recognition of all successes in competitive
                  academic events.
                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes, honors, and encourages
                  Utah high school students in their efforts to pursue both personal and competitive achievements
                  in all areas of study.
                      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah State
                  System of Higher Education, the Utah State Board of Regents, the Utah State Office of
                  Education, the Utah Education Association, and to the Board of Trustees of Dixie State College.
