7 This joint resolution of the Legislature urges the United States Congress and the
8 members of Utah's congressional delegation to work to resolve issues related to
9 undocumented individuals in the United States.
10 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
11 WHEREAS, the Federal Immigration and Naturalization Service has not addressed the
12 issue of undocumented workers from Mexico and Latin American nations;
13 WHEREAS, this is an issue of great concern in the state of Utah;
14 WHEREAS, children born in the United States to undocumented individuals are
15 American-born citizens;
16 WHEREAS, undocumented workers have been in the United States for five years to 50
17 years without being deported by the Federal Immigration and Naturalization Service;
18 WHEREAS, some American citizens have married undocumented individuals, and
19 some undocumented workers have joined the United States Armed Services;
20 WHEREAS, many undocumented individuals have paid taxes; and
21 WHEREAS, issues related to undocumented individuals raise complex questions that
22 need to be resolved on the national level:
23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
24 strongly urge the United States Congress to review and consider whether to permit parents of
25 American-born children to become American citizens, whether to permit undocumented
26 individuals who have married American citizens to become American citizens, whether to
27 permit undocumented individuals that have been in the United States for more than five years
28 be given the opportunity to become an American citizen, and whether to permit undocumented
29 individuals who have joined the United States Armed Services to become American citizens.
30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature strongly urges the United States
31 Congress to review and determine the appropriate disposition of family and financial affairs in
32 cases where an undocumented parent purchases a home and is then deported.
33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature urges Utah's congressional
34 delegation to work with Congress in resolving these issues and to provide guidance and support
35 in the resolution of these issues.
36 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the President of
37 the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the
38 Federal Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the members of Utah's congressional
39 delegation.
