LONG TITLE
General Description:
This joint resolution of the Legislature recognizes the 150th anniversary of the founding
of Sugar House.
Highlighted Provisions:
This resolution:
. recognizes the sesquicentennial of Sugar House; and
. designates April 23, 2004 as the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Sugar House.

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
WHEREAS, April 23, 2004 is the 150th anniversary of the founding of Sugar House;
WHEREAS, the proper spelling of the community's name is with two words, Sugar
House;
WHEREAS, Sugar House is named for the sugar mill that was built in 1854 on the
banks of Parley's Creek to make sugar from locally grown sugar beets;
WHEREAS, Sugar House was home to the first sugar, flour, paper, woolen, and
carding mills in Utah;
WHEREAS, Sugar House was also home to the first penitentiary, nail factory, iron
foundry, tannery, and cotton gin in the territory;
WHEREAS, Sugar House was also home to the first cocoonery and experimental tree
farm in the region and the first scientific fish hatchery in the world;
WHEREAS, Sugar House is home to Westminster College, the only fully independent,
privately owned college in the Intermountain West;
WHEREAS, today, as it was 150 years ago, Sugar House is a very desirable place to live;
WHEREAS, Sugar House has held an annual "Sugar Days" celebration since 1949, when
it was created to mark the installation of the new "White Way" lighting system in the Sugar House
business district;
WHEREAS, for generations, Sugar House was known as the "Furniture Center of the
West";
WHEREAS, the centerpiece of Sugar House is the Plaza Monument, dedicated in 1934 to
honor the vision, courage, and industry of the pioneers who established this community;
WHEREAS, Sugar House is known throughout the region as one of the premier business
and residential areas in the state; and
WHEREAS, Sugar House took the slogan "Unity in the Community" to indicate that its
residents and businesses are still working together as their forerunners did:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
recognize the 150th anniversary of the founding of Sugar House.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature designates April 23, 2004 as the
Sesquicentennial of Sugar House.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the East Valley
Chamber of Commerce.
