LONG TITLE
General Description:
This resolution recognizes those who participated in the search for Lori Hacking at the
Salt Lake Valley Landfill.
Highlighted Provisions:
This resolution:
. honors the tireless efforts of public safety and landfill personnel and other
volunteers who searched the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility for Lori
Hacking.
Special Clauses:
None
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
WHEREAS, soon after the disappearance of Lori Hacking from her Salt Lake City
neighborhood, public safety officials initiated a search of the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste
Facility;
WHEREAS, rarely has a search of the landfill been undertaken because of the near
certainty of failure in attempting to locate anything in a place where upward of 2,500 tons of
new solid waste is deposited daily;
WHEREAS, from the very beginning of the landfill search, specially trained dogs were
used and many public safety officers, landfill employees, and volunteers joined in the search;
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake Police Department led the landfill search, managing the
many details and disappointments, before Lori's remains were discovered;
WHEREAS, searchers were driven by the deep desire to provide Lori Hacking's family
with a measure of peace, comfort, closure, and the chance for an appropriate resting place;
WHEREAS, the Salt Lake Police Department called on other law enforcement agencies
for help and was joined by representatives of the Department of Public Safety's State Bureau of
Investigation, the Utah Highway Patrol, the Bureau of Forensic Services, the Salt Lake County
Sheriff's Office, the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office, and representatives of the West Jordan,
South Jordan, Sandy, University of Utah, West Valley, Salt Lake Airport, South Salt Lake,
Murray, and Midvale police departments;
WHEREAS, the search was slow, difficult, and fraught with hazards;
WHEREAS, once the search by specialty trained cadaver dogs was completed, organizers
shifted to a search by hand;
WHEREAS, on October 1, 2004, after more than two months of effort, Lori Hacking's
remains were located at the landfill;
WHEREAS, the depth of the difficulties involved in finding Lori Hacking can only be
understood by those who took part in it; and
WHEREAS, the state of Utah is grateful for the results of the search and for the miracle
of finding Lori:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
Governor concurring therein, honor those individuals who participated in the search for Lori
Hacking at the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor express gratitude
for their service and determination to succeed in the search.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to
representatives of the Salt Lake, West Jordan, South Jordan, Sandy, University of Utah, West
Valley, Salt Lake Airport, South Salt Lake, Murray, and Midvale police departments, the Salt
Lake and Duchesne County Sheriff's Departments, the Utah Department of Public Safety's State
Bureau of Investigation, the Utah Highway Patrol, the Bureau of Forensic Services, and the Salt
Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility, and each volunteer who participated in the landfill search for
Lori Hacking.
