             8      General Description:
             9          This joint resolution of the Legislature designates February 23, 2005, as Rotary Day.
             10      Highlighted Provisions:
             11          This resolution:
             12          .    designates February 23, 2005, as Rotary Day in recognition of Rotary Club
             13      International's 100th Anniversary; and
             14          .    recognizes Rotary Club International's numerous and ongoing contributions to
             15      communities throughout Utah, across the nation, and around the world.
             16      Special Clauses:
             17          None

             19      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             20          WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Chicago was founded on February 23, 1905, when
             21      Chicago attorney Paul Harris invited three business associates to a meeting to form a club to
             22      share "mutual cooperation and informal friendship such as all of us had once known in our
             23      villages";
             24          WHEREAS, by 1921, Rotary Clubs had been formed on six continents and the name
             25      Rotary International was adopted in 1922;
             26          WHEREAS, as Rotary International grew, its focus changed from serving the business
             27      and professional needs of its members to serving communities in need, as expressed in its


             28      motto: "Service Above Self";
             29          WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation, established in 1928, today garners contributions
             30      exceeding $80 million annually to support a range of humanitarian grants and educational
             31      programs;
             32          WHEREAS, in 1985, Rotary International made a commitment to immunize all of the
             33      world's children against polio, and by its centennial in 2005, Rotary International's efforts will
             34      have provided $500 million toward the eradication of polio; and
             35          WHEREAS, Rotary International, approaching its 100th anniversary, consists of 1.2
             36      million members in some 31,000 Rotary Clubs in 166 countries, all committed to addressing
             37      problems like environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk:
             38          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
             39      designates February 23, 2005, as Rotary Day in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Rotary
             40      Club International and of the organization's numerous and ongoing contributions to
             41      communities throughout Utah, across the nation, and around the world.
             42          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Rotary Club
             43      International.
