9 General Description:
10 This bill modifies Title 17, Counties, regarding the probationary period for appointed
11 county law enforcement officers.
12 Highlighted Provisions:
13 This bill:
14 . changes the probationary period for a peace officer appointed to serve as a county
15 deputy sheriff from six months to one year; and
16 . makes technical changes.

25 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
26 Section 1. Section 17-30-11 is amended to read:
27 17-30-11. Probationary period of appointment.
28 (1) Any peace officer appointed [

30 by the appointing authority.
31 (2) The probationary period shall be extended beyond the 12 months under Subsection
32 (1) as necessary for an officer who has not yet satisfactorily completed an approved peace
33 officer training program and also received a certificate [

35 Training Act.
36 (3) (a) Continuance in the position after the expiration of the probationary period
37 constitutes a permanent appointment.
38 (b) Service under a temporary or emergency appointment is not considered as part of
39 the probationary period.
