8 General Description:
9 This bill provides for honorary high school diplomas for certain veterans.
10 Highlighted Provisions:
11 This bill:
12 . allows a board of education of a school district to award an honorary high school
13 diploma to a veteran who:
14 . left high school before graduating to serve in the armed forces of the United
15 States; and
16 . served in the armed forces of the United States during the period of World War
17 II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War; and
18 . specifies eligibility requirements and procedures for requesting an honorary high
19 school diploma.

28 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
29 Section 1. Section 53A-3-427 is enacted to read:
30 53A-3-427. Honorary high school diploma for certain veterans.
31 (1) A board of education of a school district may award an honorary high school
32 diploma to a veteran, if the veteran:
33 (a) left high school before graduating in order to serve in the armed forces of the United
34 States;
35 (b) served in the armed forces of the United States during the period of World War II,
36 the Korean War, or the Vietnam War;
37 (c) (i) was honorably discharged; or
38 (ii) was released from active duty because of a service-related disability; and
39 (d) (i) resides within the school district; or
40 (ii) resided within the school district at the time of leaving high school to serve in the
41 armed forces of the United States.
42 (2) To receive an honorary high school diploma, a veteran or immediate family member
43 or guardian of a veteran shall submit to a local school board:
44 (a) a request for an honorary high school diploma; and
45 (b) information required by the local school board to verify the veteran's eligibility for
46 an honorary high school diploma under Subsection (1).
47 (3) At the request of a veteran, a veteran's immediate family member or guardian, or a
48 local school board, the Department of Veterans' Affairs shall certify whether the veteran meets
49 the requirements of Subsections (1)(b) and (c).
