9 General Description:
10 This joint resolution rejects a recommended salary increase for legislators.
11 Highlighted Provisions:
12 This resolution:
13 . rejects a salary increase for legislators recommended by the Legislative
14 Compensation Commission that would otherwise take effect on January 1, 2009.

18 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
19 WHEREAS, Utah Code Title 36, Chapter 2, Employees and Compensation, governs the
20 process for setting the salaries of members of the Legislature;
21 WHEREAS, the statute provides that, unless rejected or decreased by the Legislature,
22 the legislative salary of a member of the Legislature is automatically set at the amount
23 recommended by the Legislative Compensation Commission;
24 WHEREAS, the statute requires the Legislative Compensation Commission to make its
25 recommendations in an even-numbered year to take effect beginning January 1 of the following
26 odd-numbered year;
27 WHEREAS, the Legislative Compensation Commission, in its report prepared for the
28 2008 General Session, recommended that the legislative salary level be increased from $130 to
29 $140 per day for:
30 (1) each calendar day of an annual general session; and
31 (2) each day the legislator attends:
32 (a) a veto-override session;
33 (b) a special session; or
34 (c) other authorized legislative meeting;
35 WHEREAS, pursuant to the statute, the Legislature must take action in 2008 if the
36 Legislature wants to reject the recommendations of the Legislative Compensation Commission
37 prepared for the 2008 General Session, which, except for this joint resolution would take effect
38 January 1, 2009; and
39 WHEREAS, with limited state revenues this fiscal year, the increase in legislative
40 salaries is not appropriate at this time:
41 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
42 rejects the salary amount recommended by the Legislative Compensation Commission in the
43 commission's report prepared for the 2008 General Session.
44 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that:
45 (1) the legislative salary of a member of the Legislature shall remain at the amount
46 effective on January 1, 2007 of $130 per each day the member of the Legislature is entitled to
47 pay under Title 36, Chapter 2, Employees and Compensation; and
48 (2) consistent with the recommendations of the Legislative Compensation
49 Commission, the additional compensation for legislative leadership shall remain at the levels
50 effective on January 1, 2007.
51 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Legislative
52 Compensation Commission.
