18 LONG TITLE
19 General Description:
20 This resolution of the Legislature expresses support for public and private efforts to
21 increase and improve cancer treatment, screening, and research programs.
22 Highlighted Provisions:
23 This resolution:
24 . recognizes that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States;
25 . recognizes that cancer treatment, screening, and research programs reduce cancer
26 deaths and can help prevent cancer;
27 . recognizes the need for private and public support of cancer treatment, screening,
28 and research programs in Utah; and
29 . recognizes the importance of cancer prevention, early detection and survivorship
30 programs, expanding access to services and programs, and public and private
31 funding for cancer research.

35 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
36 WHEREAS, cancer is the second leading cause of deaths in both men and women in
37 the United States;
38 WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2009 nearly 8,000 Utahns will be diagnosed with
39 some form of cancer;
40 WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2009 nearly 3,000 Utahns will die from cancer;
41 WHEREAS, the cost of cancer to Utah and its citizens exceeds $150,000,000 each
42 year;
43 WHEREAS, treatment to cure or control cancer is essential in reducing the burden of
44 cancer;
45 WHEREAS, nearly 14% of Utahns are uninsured and unable to acquire adequate
46 cancer treatment;
47 WHEREAS, the Utah Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, developed by the Utah
48 Department of Health and the Utah Cancer Action Network with the encouragement of the
49 Utah Legislature, seeks to aid Utahns in getting the information they need to overcome their
50 challenges with cancer;
51 WHEREAS, Utah has some of the lowest cancer screening rates in the nation and
52 subsequently some of the highest rates of cancer diagnosed at late stage; and
53 WHEREAS, a number of opportunities for cancer research remain unfunded or
54 underfunded:
55 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
56 expresses appreciation to all Utahns in the public and private sectors involved in cancer
57 treatment, screening, and research programs.
58 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes the need for and
59 expresses support of public and private efforts to increase and improve cancer treatment,
60 screening, and research efforts.
61 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes the importance of
62 cancer prevention, early detection and survivorship programs, expanding access to cancer care
63 services and programs, and public and private funding for cancer research.
64 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to each of Utah's
65 cancer treatment and research centers, the Utah Cancer Control Program of the Utah
66 Department of Health, the Utah Cancer Action Network, and the American Cancer Society.
